I haven't had any trouble since I got the 4s, but I did have to plug and unplug my 3g every once in a while. My radio would show an error for some reason. I have a Clarion head unit not the Sony.

Try a different iphone cable. I've had that issue and tried a new connection and it worked great.

Any apple device works with the Sony unit in the axis boats. You do not have to turn the volume up or down. When you plug the device in and is recognized it configures the sound to a line level input. It is ran through a flat equalizer interface. Now if you use the headphone 3.5mm cable that's another story. One last thing. It seems the 5.0.1 jailbreak has been giving us problems recognizing on head units on iPhone 4 and 4s. If your device still fails to to a reset with iTunes it usually fixes it. I use my USB for everything.

ipod nano that I leave in boat has been flawless since last summer. Took it out last week to delete and add music, plugged it back in and the sony face recognized it, let me browse whatever, and the iPod showed it was docked, but no music.
After testing other iPods and cables that worked fine, I figured I screwed something up when I hooked it up to my computer. so i reset it and hooked it up and got the most recent software upgrade and ... boom. works again.

I have not had a problem with the 3g or 4s iphone (I only use my phones for Pandora, otherwise I use a flash drive), but I did notice that when I tried to use an old firewire cable the Sony HU did not recognize it. Changed to a new one and have not had any problems.
