When we get our new boat I'm going to try out wake surfing. My kids already have a board and have been surfing for a couple years now with friends. I'm a big guy 6'5" 260 lbs. any recommendations on a board for a beginner and a big guy? I've been reading about custom boards (Doomswell and Day1). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Phase 5 Kong is supposed to be a good board for big people. Also the Inland Surfer Red Rocket.

I'm a little heavier than you.. I own a red rocket, phase 5 quest and a custom soulcraft hunter clement. I learned on my red rocket and it was great for a season for me but I quickly grew out of it.. the quest was worthless for me but my 240lb friend like it. My soulcraft is amazing and the best purchase I have ever made for a board. If you are in seattle you are welcome to try them out..

The Kong would be like riding a garage door to me based solely on looks as I have never ridden one.

I started with a CWB ride and quickly outgrew it (actually lost it off my bimini this summer). I'm 205, and it rode fine. Replaced with an inland surfer swallow. I would say that I probably could have gotten up on a swallow as a beginner, but it would have been more difficult. IMO, it will be best to get a board that is beginner rated and start there. You will outgrow it, but you'll need a beginner board on the boat for guests anyway.

I'm shopping for a used beginner board to have around.

Find a Ronix Longboard 5'4. It's a fun, easy board that you and bigger friends can easily ride. You will want a longer board until you advance your skills, as your height is another challenge for proper foot placement and weight distribution. I use mine to teach all adult beginners now as it's very easy to get up on and forgiving once they get towards the pocket on the wave.

Have you ever had a 260lb plus person ride one? I rode one, or should I say tried and it had no push with me on it..

Edit: now that I think about it the one I tried was shorter then that.. I'll have to find out what it was.

I have a Ronix Powertail that we have been using to learn on and it is awesome. I'm 6'2" 300lbs and it works awesome. My two buddies also have been learning on it and they range from 5'9" 245lbs to 6'0" and 200lbs.
