Not trying to start any crap here but why are you guys saying to weigh down the surf side? By listing the boat you are pulling the gate out of the water and making it less effective. I have tried it and noticed no significant gains. The best adjustments is the bow weight depending on rear ballast, crew and wedge.

From your description it sounded like you were trying to surf the side that the paddle kicks out on. Just wanted to make sure that wasn't the case. I've never see a boat with Surf Gate not have a clean wake even with no weight in it.

We primarily surf the port side and the wave most certainly has more 'push' with the boat slightly listed (ie a few crew members adding up to ~500-600lbs)

When surfing starboard, I do not need to position the crew.

+1. When the boat is even the starboard side always has a better wave....and I don't even surf starboard side. I've remedied this issue by putting a little extra weight on the surf side. It's really minimal when it's just my wife, myself and my daughter as when I've driving there's 275lbs in the drivers seat so 500lbs on the port side + my 60lb daughter isn't a large offset anyways, but again that little bit helps for some reason.

If you have enough weight you don't pull the surf gate out of the water at all... I always have people sitting on surf side with all ballast full.

And in my boat it is a noticeable difference when you are surfing.
