That's one of the problem with wakeboarding, very very little progression in the equipment now. Most current year boards are last year's board with new graphics and $500-$600.

@AJWest In a sport, a certain level of excitement makes most people go harder and push themselves. If wake surfing does it for you that's great, it just doesn't do it for me. After a couple more slams, face plants, or years in age, wake surfing may give me all the excitement I need. Progressing to a higher level in any sport requires a person to push harder and strive to be better. It's just in wake surfing most people seem to be complacent just trying to stay in the pocket.

Most days we don't even bring the surf board out.
I'm with Stuart, wakeboarding currently provides a totally different level of excitement than surfing. And I think its definitely true for both the rider and those in the boat. Watching someone push just trying to get to a comfortable hs wake to wake point is much more entertaining/exciting/awesome than anything I've seen surfing.
I stopped skiing and moved to wakeboarding because there was just so much more you can do on a board than a ski. Surfing is more individualistic during advancement than chasing buoys but its still nothing like boarding.

AJWest - Not sure you can say that's a problem with any board sport. How much change has there been in skateboards, snowboards and surfboards in the last few years? All a wakesurf board is a skim board with fins. And skimboarders are like the rollerbladers of the surf community.

Sounds like the problem is your friends are lame! We surf 99% of the time and we are all snowboarders who have no problems sending it off a 50 footer. We are pushing it as hard as we can 100% of the time.

I am just the kind of person who does not like the feeling of being pulled. It throws off my balance and feels completely foreign to me (I grew up on skateboards and snowboards). The less crap I have in my hands the better.

@Vanamp as I said earlier, very little surfing has been happening behind my boat. Keep going off 50 footers buddy.

I still wakeboard some but I'm 44 and knees stay sore longer after 2-3 sets. I don't ride 10-15 min sets, I ride 30-45 min sets and still can maintain my small bag of tricks but prefer less impact of wakesurfing most of the time. At the present time it seems even the wakeboard companies are pushing their R&D into wakesurf equipment. I'd imagine the wakeboard companies are seeing, and have been seeing, their percentage of wakeboard sales decline while their wakesurf sales increase. It's a $$$ game and business is business. My comment about wakeboards not having any progression lately is more towards that I personally don't see a need for a new board every year or even every 2 years. The board isn't going to make me land a new trick and a new coat of graphics on last year's board isnt going to get me to buy a $500-$600 board when I can get the exact same shape on close out for $200-$275. Wakesurfing is still fairly new and has not hit that point of being stale. Boat sales and innovation are also leaving wakeboarding as the secondary sport. I'm not saying I wakesurf so I'm on the wakesurf only bandwagon but it's where the wakeboating and boarding industry has shifted

Anybody who talks about themselves like that is probably "sending it" to their face! haha. Be humble!

You are 100% right AJ! I just think it's very unfortunate. I grew up doing slalom/trick/knee and we used to surf behind an 89 Nautique on a 5'6" Local Motion back in 1999. But, even then it was just to mess around we didn't think of it as a legit sport. Even though it is fun. :D
