Dave ,ran the surf gate last season & inspected hull after each outing ,all looked good inside & out . Checked jelcoat for stres cracks ,all good. Malibu is telling every body that surf gates can't be retrofitted to older boats. Otherwise they would loose out on sales, lots of people have upgraded there older boats just to have surf gate .

Hope this surfgate project helps some of you to install your own gates,there is lots of DIY surfgate information on the malibu crew forum. Can post some more photo if anybody is interested . Winter here in Australia at the moment , boat in storage so may need to wait until next trip to work on boat .

I'd appreciate some more photos of the platform. From the photos it looks like you brought it in 3-4 inches on each side and might have a recess on the bottom where the gate would come against it.

Dave have some more platform photos , yes it is 4" shorter both sides for gate clearance . Once everything was installed I recessed the sides to get the gate to platform clearance spot on. Then removed platform & smoothed out all under side to help the water flow,then spray painted.

This shot is grinding out recess to get 1/2" clearance both sides . I would hate to think how many hours I spent on project to date . Have spent about $1200 on parts & materials,my labour is free. Very happy with the wave now & wife is happy with no more listing of boat.

I"ll say it again, your work on this is awesome. It looks factory produced. I have questions if you don't mind. On the platform did you cut a section out of it and then put the ends back on or is that all just cut off and rounded out? The photo of the extra glass at actuator mount, what is the tape holding and is there wood under the new glass or as you said just two extra layers of cloth and resin? Again, great job!

The platform was the old style , big square one . Cut the two sections out either side of the platform mounts angling back to look the same as 2012 & 13 platform . The ends were reused a vee fillet ground into all joining faces , then glassed back together . You could do the same with 12-13 platform & only cut centre section out but would loose the wedge acsess door ? ( then fit up a power wedge )$$$$$ joking. At the actuator mount point the tape was just holding the carpet out the way, while fiberglass work was done. I put a steel backing plate in to help spread the load from hindges & sealed up with sikaflex marine sealant.
