I started filming using a Go Pro 3 and my DJI Phantom FC40 drone behind my buddies X45, hopefully everything will be a lot smoother behind my new T22 this year.

I would look into removing the FC40 camera and mounting your gopro with a gimbal.. Footage will be smoother and the GoPro is superior to the FC40 cam.

The drone was around $500 with protectors for the blades. I have another one on order when they get built, it should fly autonomously and follow the rider. That one is a little more. I also have a Go pro i attach to the bottom of the drone. DJI phantom

I am in the process of having one built too. Should be ready in about a week and will follow the rider and you can control it from a tablet. You can make changes on the fly (pun intended) and make it follow from different angles/altitudes and even circle the boat. Really looking forward to getting it flying. And as an added bonus, mine is waterproof and allows for the waterproof housing on the gopro to be attached. This is the only way I would personally have one. Everything seems to fail at the worst time and Id hate to dunk a $1,200 setup in the lake that wasnt waterproof.
