That is my new board. I really like riding skim. I am 5'9 and 230lbs. The board is the 4'10 board. It should be perfect for me and durable enough as a boat board. If this thread takes off, I will review other boards I have rode too.

Nice I'm in the market for a surf board but still unsure of which to get? Skim? Surf? I just bought a 2015 A22 don't know if the boat matters but just throwing that out there? I'm 5'10" 180 lbs

Surfboards are personal preference. I suggest starting out on one like I posted above. It is a slingshot skim bender. It will eventually become your boat board as you get better. Triple X makes some good budget boards that are very light. I picked this board up off of evo.com for $250. It was a steal for me. If you plan the same, I suggest getting the 52" instead of the 56" that I got. Whatever you do, stay away from the hyperlite broadcast. It sucks. I avoid wakeboard company surfboards except as my boat board. They are very boring and very slow. Not saying they aren't decent for a first timer but even a board that's a pig in the water will make it harder for s first timer to go ropeless because it can't keep up with the boat. I've been riding Shred Stixx and now the Chaos line by Shred Stixx. These boards are handmade pieces of art and still durable if you get the bamboo and carbon. My current board is a Chaos Bamboo Sixer with carbon rails.

I agree. Typically I do the same. This slingshot will be a great boat board and probably something I will ride for most of the start of summer. My buddy that surfs a lot more than I do recommended this Slingshot board. I trust his opinion cause I know he has surfed most of non-wakeboard brands surf boards he recommened this one as a budget board. I have a friend that is going to let me try a lot of the Phase 5 boards this summer.

I will give this thread a bump in a month or two once I get a chance to surf it.

I finally got a chance to ride the Slingshot Skim Bender. I like it. I should be able to enjoy it most of the summer. My only complaint is it may be slightly too big compared to boards I normally ride. I typically ride smaller boards cause all my friends own smaller boards which may take some time for me to get adjusted to a larger board.

Hyper lite shim is what I've been riding and it's the 4'7 and I weigh 180lbs very responsive!

i have the Byerly Volt 4'10" and the Byerly Buzz 5'2". the Buzz doesnt feel good in the water at all. the volt (has 2 small fins at the forward settings) pops out of the water better and feels good getting into the wave but just cant go ropeless. am new to surfing but the board seems slow. I am 5'9" weigh 225 lbs. am looking for a diff board. ('15 A22 stock ballast plus 750s and 950 bow sack.) my lighter sons (180-190) can do it on the volt.

At 225lbs you are probably past the capabilities of those board at those sizes on the A22 wave. Plus, you're a big guy trying to learn on a small-ish board with a pin tail. Pin tails are more for skim style and tend to use the rail to be locked into the wave which makes them inherently a little slower than a true surf style board. Pin tails have less surface area to be pushed when compared to a squash or swallow tail. I would seriously be shopping for a new board. Plus as you've stated you are new to the sport so your technique is probably somewhat off. There's more to it than just standing there really. A board that can appear slow with a passive rider that thinks all he/she needs to do is put weight on the front foot to go faster. That's true in some cases but in others the board might need to be "buttered" or pumped for the board to have speed. Every board performs differently compared to others, even in simple as trying to go ropeless and finding the sweet spot of the wave. Demo different boards if you can but at 225lbs you've got to look at boards for your weight.
