Sub enclosure ideas.

OK sound from stock sub enclosure, kinda disappointed the factory couldn't do better ... the measurements are 19 x 12.5 x 11 which is oversized. Nothing glued / sealed, holes for the wires left loose. The plastic enclosure is 3/4 poly, thin front, I think about 1/2" thick. Attached are images. About all that could be salvaged is the carpeted cover. I do like the idea of the plastic materials but they'd need to be thicker.

Going to try to seal the enclosure from the inside ... while this isn't perfect, it would at least come close to the manufacturer's guidelines. The plastic is at least as dense I'd think ... with the exception of the grooves which allow the enclosure to bend ... for that, I'll fill with a fiberglass resin and hardener then seal the hole for the wire.

They just posted a XXX 40Hz enclosure. I'm going to tear out my existing 12" and build this. I have a friend who's done it and says it sounds awesome. You can use the second baffle for the cover/mount on your enclosure.

Ya, I saw and posted the original specs on page one of this thread. Once I got my boat and saw they attempted to build a box, I was 'baffled' they couldn't complete the job properly. So close yet so far! I'll be building one to specs, just need to figure out how to build a cover that looks appealing. Saw one gel type cover in one post, but no idea on how to build that or where to buy it (it was blue). There's one black one with the Axis logo ... that material is easy to come by. I know of a supplier to get the PVC sheet goods which is the path I'll go then likely try to find a fabric to cover it that looks close to the factory materials.

I posted the one with the axis logo. That took me about 2 hrs to complete. I had to throw something together last minute. I will probably be re-visiting that this winter...

Sealed the enclosure best I could using silicone at the interior joints and fiberglass resin to fill the interior slots from the curved bends. Also added 8 screws to secure the front panel. The wire that was slipped through a small hole in the rear to the sub was attached to a speaker connecter I installed (bought from Home Depot) then sealed the adapter from the inside and added a new short wire from it to the sub. There's a noticable differrence. For the $30 spent on the adapter and fiberglass resin it was worth it to me. Next investment would be a new box and front panel, not a huge addition in cost but certainly time ... at least was able to use the original box.

The box Dimensions are 17" high, 17" wide, 8" deep. That gives a hair over 1 sq. foot of air space. The type S sub requires .9 gross sq. ft and .85 net sq. ft.
The box is just a basic sealed enclosure that I coated with resin to water proof. I then placed the box under the dash, then install the plastic panel. I then counter sunk screws, combining the wood enclosure and plastic panel. I also replaced the subwoofer screws with longer ones to further add strength between everything.

It sounds pretty damn good for the $50 i spent. I wasn't expecting much with a type S sub and only 250 watts or whatever the stock amp pushes.

Here are the pictures. What do you all think?

Did you bolt the enclosure to the floor of the boat?

I just bought 0.88 cu ft enclosure from bestbuy.com for $30 with free shipping. I couldnt pass the $30 because a MDF 3/4 sheet is $40. I will take the carpet off and spray it with bed liner paint to water proof it. It should come in next week and I will post pics of the install. I am goning to follow kx250frider617 install.

Nope. All of the weight is on the floor though. I haven't had any issues with it yet. If you don't have the heater tube in the hallway, you can make the box bigger. There are little cut outs in the plastic kick panel reinforcement that you will have to silicone to create a good seal against the box.
