How to adjust the shaft seal?

So my boat has been taking on quite a bit of water lately, partly due to a leaking fitting on the center stock tank, and I noticed that when I pulled my boat out Saturday night, water was pouring from around where the shaft exits the hull. Im wondering if there is just a fitting or something to snug up to slow it to a drip. I figured if gallons were pouring out, Im sure gallons were pouring in. Wanting to get a plan to fix it for next weekend so any input would be great.

I wouldn't worry about it. Mine does the same. The seal uses the water as lubricant. It is under warranty so if it is a real concern, have the dealer look at it.

To verify it isn't the shaft seal, pull the engine divider and take a look next time you are out on the water.

You could loosen the jam nut on the seal housing and adjust it but it's a real pain to do even if you have the proper tools. You don't want to know what I did to fix mine ...... lol dripless

I can handle the 4"s of water in the boat I guess, if it's normal. I just didn't think it was the norm at all.

4" of water isn't normal. Like walter said, if its the packing, its a pain... I gave up trying to tighten it (I have the rights tools). I ended up having it serviced.

Water is taken from the motor and sent to the seal to lubricate the shaft, when it's done that it exits via the same hole in the hull the shaft comes from.... Therefore, if water was pouring out of there when the boat is removed from the water this would be totally normal.

What wouldn't be normal would be water pouring into the boat from the shaft. if this is the case then you have a problem. The Axis uses a dripless shaft seal (at least has for the last few years, not sure on the very early ones) so is not adjustable, if it's leaking then it has failed or the shaft is running way out of alignment and has worn the bushing.

Pretty sure the '09 to '11 had the wax rope gland type seal, they switched to dripless sometime in '12

Mine gets 4-6" of water after a full day of kids jumping around and life jackets dripping all over the place and hours of kids jumping from the sun pad splashing all over the place, the only place you can really see the water is the access door by the helm, it usually drains out pretty fast, water should dribble out a little where the prop seal is because that is just excess coming out of the engine hoses, if it runs out a bunch you may ask your dealer to have a look at it.

a 2014 boat has dripless shaft. no internal drips should come from it. But when rmeoving from the water, it's normal to see water pour from it as it drains form the cooling system.
