I don't understand American trucks at all.... WHy so big and thirsty?

For example, out workshop truck here is a Volkswagen Amarok Pickup. It has a 2.0 Litre Twin Turbo Diesel Motor with under 200hp and under 300ft lbs torque. Pulls everything we have here just fine (18-24ft boats). On monday I towed a 22ft Nautique over 500 Miles with no problems. Averaged around 25mpg. With an A20 on the back I'll get around 26-28.

I understand we have slightly higher quality fuel here but that's can't be everything?

I think there are a lot a factors that would explain that. First, there is the cultural aspect that bigger is better. But when I'm towing there is generally 3 kids in the back so I'm happy to have the extra space.

Fuel prices would be a factor as well. You're probably paying about 80% over what I'm paying (Vancouver, Canada) and my fuel costs drop another 20% when I fill up in the US. If our prices matched yours we'd all be driving smaller and more efficient vehicles.

I'm driving a Dodge with a 6.7 diesel. Towing I'm getting better mileage over the gas equivalent, but not for regular driving. When I filled up yesterday I paid $4 US / gallon, but gas was only 3.40 / gallon. Diesel used to be on par with gas but recently it is higher and that hasn't helped with the acceptance of diesel engines outside of larger trucks. Plus we typically pay a premium to get a vehicle with a diesel engine and that increase can take a while to pay off with the better efficiency you get with diesel.

Lastly, for me I'm towing no where near my capacity. So as the previous poster stated I don't really notice the boat back there. Usually towing concerns are about "can I pull it" but I know that if I ever have to slam on the brakes the grossly oversize brakes are going to come in handy.

08 cummins 4x4 with the 6.7 in it. I took off all the blue tech, straight piped it and programmed it, and went from 15 mph to 21-22. I tow my 28' fifth wheel and boat at the same time sometimes and it pulls fine. With just my A22 back there, you can't tell it's even there. I'm not sure what the gas trucks are getting now a days, but I used to get around 12 it seems. If I had to do it again, I'd get an 06-07.5 5.9L cummins. 3/4 ton is plenty truck for lost people just towing a boat.

I think everyone with the 6.7 would rather have the 5.9. :)

No they don't sell those in the states. There are a ton of vehicles sold outside of North America that are smaller with turbo diesels.

I think I'd be the first to admit that if they sold them here, and I could afford the fuel, I'd be in a big V8 :-)

Gasoline, or petrol as we call it here works out at around £1.35 per litre, which is £5.11 per US gallon = $8.33 per gallon. Diesel is maybe 10 cents more a litre (30 cents a gallon).

2013 F450 Dually. The truck is overkill for pulling my boat. I also pull a 38 ft 5th wheel. I like the other people like the extra space because my children (6,8) usually arguing in the back. I personally like to stop if someone pulls out in front of me. I didn't buy the truck for fuel economy. I bought it to tow.

Too ugly and girlie for a "dude's" truck in the U.S....at least a Texan lol. I'll never buy a gas truck after owning diesels. To me it's like owning a 4x4 or all-wheel drive...you say you don't need it until you REALLY need it and its too late.

I have an 04 duramax and put in a Titan fuel tank in place of the original, now I can go nearly 1000 miles unloaded and close to 600 with the boat, I love not having to stop for fuel.
