I’ve been thinking about a surf pipe recently but was not sure about getting one. Mostly concerned about loosing access to the wedge. So rather than buying one I was not sure of, I figured I’d build it and be sure I had the clearance I wanted.

I started by mocking up with some 4” ducting to get an idea of the shape.



Next it was time to get serious with a bandsaw and some 4” exhaust tube from a local muffler shop. I cut it in a bunch of 30 degree wedges. Rotating them gives an infinite amount of angles. It took a while but I finally got it into a shape I liked. Blue tape was key to holding the pieces together as I fitted and adjusted.



After a lot of welding and grinding, the final piece came together. It may not a piece of art but it will do.



It’s made of mild steel (because that’s what I can weld) and corrosion protection is a big concern. What do I paint it with?

Nice, but should have done stainless and tiged it, paint won't last even the high temp crap look into getting it thermal coated imo

Have you thought about using something like POR-15?

Stainless is the obvious choice but requires tools that I don’t have, including a tig welder.

Powder coating is out because they cannot do the inside. I am going to try some high temp engine block paint and see what happens. If it does not hold up then I will investigate some more aggressive options like the por-15.

Engine block paint will be more than enough. It can't possibly get that hot, it's sitting IN the water for crying out loud.

Also, make sure you drill a drain hole in the bottom of the flat part. Ideally at the lowest point, so that water doesn't sit in the bottom of the pipe.

Where did you buy the flanges?

The mounting flange was made by hand. I made a template out of card stock and then transferred that to a sheet of mild steel from Home Depot. A little patience and a fair amount of filing and it worked out pretty good.
