 Post subject: NL4-XL GPS conversion

My GPS conversion came in, it took longer to find a screwdriver and file than it did to install it, very simple to hook up. I'll test it next weekend over the holiday. It had some pretty good reviews on bucrew so I decided I'd try it out, mine tends to surge about halfway through a hard turn, hopefully this will solve it.

I'll report back after memorial weekend on how it works, but I'm sure it will be good, and was all of 10 minutes to install

Mine only has that surge with the cruise when I use the 5-blade OJ prop, the 1235 never did it. Cool upgrade, thanks for sharing

If you surf Walter, let us know if it holds speed more accurately. I'm not complaining about the way the stock cruise holds speed but it always has that .2 to .3 fluxuation in indicated speed.

Yes the 1235 is the offered "high altitude" prop and is a terrific prop. The surging around turns when your speed control is on is common, depending on where your throttle arm is positioned, how much weight you have, wedge or not, direction you turn and how tight you turn.

If you have your throttle all the way pinned like some do, when you turn you shed speed which causes the speed control to want to speed up. Having your throttle wide open or mostly open, you are allowing the speed control to use up all that throttle to get back up to speed, it will use all of it immediately and also back off quickly too, causing some surging. If you back down your throttle once you are at or close to speed set, around a turn the control will not have very much throttle/engine speed available to accelerate to hold the speed and it will feel a lot smoother. It may not be enough throttle to keep the speed perfectly, but that is something that can be learned.

Obviously with more weight, wedge, and tighter turns, holding speed or keeping it smooth will be more difficult and more surging may be felt.

The paddle wheel is not centered, it is off center towards the starboard/driver side. When you turn to the right, the paddle wheel will sense a tremendous deceleration and will react by trying to accelerate quickly even though the boat as a whole is still traveling at the set speed. When you turn left, the paddle wheel will "feel" like the boat is accelerating and will compensate by reducing speed even though the boat as a whole is still traveling at your desired speed. Try it with speed control off and watch your digital speedometer, go at a constant speed and then turn slightly to the left and you will watch an increase of speed on your digital speedometer, and a reduction of speed when turning right.

Unless it is crazy full throttle to idle surging, I am thinking yours is completely normal.
