I have an 2011 A22 with full PNP ballast system. So far I have found the only way I can surf is when I fill the front ballast full and the passenger ballast full with a speed of 10.4 mph.

It is just my wife, my 2 little boys, and myself in the boat so far when trying to surf so we are pretty much just relying on the boats ballast system for weight.

I can let go of the rope and surf when we are going 10.4 mph but i basically have to be right on the back end of the boat. If I drop the wedge I lose the wake. The wake is very washed out and I feel like it should be a lot cleaner. Is there any other way that I should try to set up the ballast or do I just need more people in the boat?

We finally got the wake dialed in on the A20 of my buddies. We had stock ballast full in front and whatever side we were surfing on 7 adults in rear of the boat, wedge down & 10mph. Wake was perfect. We found at first the wake would wash out with wedge, but with that amount of prople it seemed to work perfect.

I just purchased a 2012 A20 and finally got the surf wake set up. I fill all stock hard tanks plus 750 rear PNP on surf side, 400 along side seat w/ skybox seat pulled out to prevent from falling on floor, 400 PNP under bow seats, and another 400 on top of the bow seats. I found that when the wedge is down, it dispaces a lot of weight to the non surf side, creating washout and decreases wave size on intended surf side. The weight in the bow is crucial even with the 2012 swim platform.
What board are you riding? I just picked up a Ronix carbon thruster (5'1"). This thing rips with our weight set up!

Sounds like I do need more weight and I think you are right about the wedge causing so much weight displacement that it washes out the surf side wake. I'm riding the beginner Ronix board (can't remember the name) but it seems to work pretty good and until I get the wake dialed in I will have to wait on a new board.

Cleanest wake I get on my 2011 A22 is 750 rear full, 250 tank full, center empty, front PnP full, 400 sac on top of bow seat towards surfing side, 400 sac on side seat, wedge down, just me and my girl and 11.8-12mph on the cruise (havent GPS corrected my speedo yet).

I'll post a video in the next day or so, but I have a 2011 a22 with 750 PnP in the rear lockers and the 900 lb PnP on the bow. I fill the 750 + hard tank in the rear on the side I surf, the center tank full and the bow PnP about 80% full, with the wedge down. At 10.8 mph I can get a pretty decent wake with a driver and flagger in the boat. With more people it gets really good. I have noticed if the rear tank on the other side has any water in it, it destroys the wake quickly. I think having the bow empty would make the wake steeper and bigger but my wife is new to driving and freaks out of the nose it up. I've sacrificed to get the tow.
With that set up I can do floaters and slashes and the occassion 360 spin and be able to catch back up with the boat no problem.
