Seriously...I must not be weighting the boat right...because I can't find the pit at all, every time I drop the rope the boat slowly pulls away and then I fall out of the wave. I feel super comfortable on the board, but can't stay in the wave for the life of me. It's really frustrating... I'm guessing the wave I'm making is crap because I feel no speed behind it and I'm on a 4'10 LF Custom Thruster, which is a rocket of a board

How are you guys that are going without a rope weighting the boat? .

How fast do you go?

Do you run with the wedge down?

How much do you weigh? What's your ballast set-up? Wedge up or down? Reg or goofy side?

I'm 195lbs right now and I'm running:

*wedge down
*500lbs bow (750lb bag, not sure if I need to use it all here)
*750lb rear left locker full
*200lb rear left hard tank full
*500lb center hard tank full.

I'm riding on the toeside (left), where all the weight is.

Do you need to weigh the bow down harder, or is the rear corner where you're riding most important?

Does the boat ever plane out or do you just get to the speed you want and deal with it?

Do I need to leave the wedge up for this or can you do it with both?

Sounds like I'm going way too fast, but I don't think my speedometer is properly calibrated. I'll have to fix that.

You never get on plane. Anywhere from 10.5-11.5 and adjust to dial in the wave pocket. You're riding "regular" or the passenger side as youre calling it toeside (we all pretty much ride with our toes towards the wave unless you're being adventurous and riding heelside with your heels to the wave). Goofy side is the driver side. You can ride wedge up or down and it makes a pretty big difference but it's preference. I find the wave has more push (power) with wedge down. I ride with the center about half full, PnP front sac full, and extra 400lb sac on top of the bow towards the surf side. If I were you I'd get a bigger board to learn the basics of how to place your weight on the board and how to control speeding up and slowing down. A bigger board will be easier and more forgiving to finding and staying in the pocket.

Thanks for the tips!

I can carve really easily and am learning how to pump right now, but there's just no force behind the wave. The only time I felt any kind of force was when I was practically putting the tip of my board on the swim platform, which sucked. I rode a Slingshot SP4 last weekend and didn't notice any difference in finding/staying in the pocket http://www.evo.com/wake-surfboards/slingshot-sp-wakesurf-board-5.aspx

I really think it's the surf wake I'm creating that is the problem, I'll try the weighting you've done and see if that makes a difference, and of course I will keep practicing on my riding, but it feels 100% natural to carve and ride with the rope, I can feel how I'm speeding up and slowing the board down too....just gotta get that pocket! 8-)

Might try to get out today but that stupid tropical depression Beryl is battering Jacksonville and sending rain bands down into Orlando later this afternoon.

I wonder if it's harder to get a good wave on an A20 vs. A22....probably a negligible difference.

This is stock and rear Pnp full, stock center and front pnp as full as it gets, wedge up, 5 average sized people 1 dog at about 11.0 mph. Best I can remember its far back on the groove almost out but there is a lot you can't see cause of the way picture was taken I'm 5'9. I find the groove super wide as compared to the x2 I used to surf behind.

Dude... we just started the whole surf thing and yesterday was the first day I felt comfortable keeping up with the boat. My friends are still having a bit of trouble on the regular side but I am a goofy rider. Keep playing around with the weight in the boat and try to learn using the superman position, (one hand touching the wake and one hand over the nose of the board) when your trying to catch back up to the boat remember that you want to be traveling ALONG the wave not away from it. Crouch down and lean forward. I don't know if I should be giving advice at all because I am a complete noob but some times it other beginners can help because it is so fresh in my mind. Anyways dude keep trying and good luck.

Anybody notice what side of the A22 makes better surf wave?
