Hey bud I dropped some knowledge on your partner!
I have one like vanamp linked and if I were doing it over again, I'd get a
mighty vac or go all-in and get the electric
jabsco pump/bucket setup (the Cadillac of extractors).
Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion. I sprung for the jabsco one linked here and it worked very well. I didn't bother threading anything onto the end of the drain hose on the engine, I just ran the clear tube that came with the kit up through the drain hose and sucked everything out that way. I then ran the clear tube down the dipstick hole and got nothing further out of it. It did take about 15 minutes to pump the (warm) oil out, but I had other things to do while it was running. Didn't spill a drop and it was super easy to pour the oil from the bucket into the "new oil" containers once I was done filling the boat.
I had previously bought and tried a
mityvac one and I must have had a defective unit because it required me to manually pump the entire time to get anything to suck out (threw it in the garbage). The electric pump was a definite step up.
