My work assignment in Colorado for the year is almost over. My wife has actually brought up the idea of selling our 2000 VLX and upgrading to a newer boat. We love our current boat and it fits fine for our needs but we now have two kids and their friends/family riding with us. It will be a little bit before we are back in Florida and putting away some extra cash for a newer model. But I wanted to get some feedback on the Axis line on any years to avoid. We are 50/50 wakeboard/surf. I have always liked less is more on a boat and easier to work on for me. We do not ride with the wedge currently but don't have a problem using it if needed. The A22 caught our eye. Just looking for general thoughts on the different models/years. Seems like 2015 was year several changes improved the boat. T22 is in the running as well. Wife likes the pickle fork bow.

Well you have come to a very biased place for some insight but here's my .02. Axis boats are great! I currently have a 2015 t22 which I have put 250 hours on. I frequently have about 4-6 people on the boat with about 2500 lbs of ballast and wakeboard 75% of the time. My wife and some others prefer surfing so we def have put some time in playing with the boat. It's very consistant in both wake and wave. The added wedge allows for some wave shaping and the surf gate is in my opinion the best surf system out there. My good friend who I frequently ride with has a 2009 vlx which he purchased to upgrade from his 2002 vlx. I prefer the meatiness of the axis wake compared to the newer vlx and it's no comparison to the older vlx.

Now that being said if you were to browse through other forums you would get different info on the differences between brands. Axis def has its flaws and in some aspects other boats may rank a few more points (fit & finish) maybe some quality control issues but nothing overly off the wall to make me think any less of my boat. I bought it for the wake/wave capabilities and it has yet to let me down or leave me wanting for more. The ease of switching between sports is worth the added expense of buying a newer surf ready boat.

Hope this little ramble helps. Long story short you will have a blast on the water if you are on a boat and even more fun if it's an axis/Malibu

Thanks for the quick replies. One question I have is how the wake is for beginners with the larger beam. I pull a lot of beginners learning to clear the wake. I think anything newer is going to be wider but just wanted to see everyone's thoughts on beginners learning to clear the wake.

For beginners just drain the ballast they'll be fine

Got the draining the weight part. More looking for feedback on other experiences with the width of the wake once drained. Malibu has always been pretty with a clean wake at slower speeds for beginners that come out to ride.

I took a few newbies out and they were ok at 18 mph no ballast, it's our off season or I'd get some pictures

We always shorten the rope to around 55-60 feet for beginners once that are ready to start trying to clear the wake. But leave it around 70-75 for more advanced riders. Also like to start newbies on the longer rope.

New to the forum and boating. I just ordered an Axis t-22 after researching all of the "value" boats. I narrowed it down between the Axis and MB Sport as the others felt cheap to me. I was sold on the MB because the fit and finish are nicer and came with more standard features, (zero off, 8" exile fronts, sub, nicer trailer, billet aluminum dash) that's until I drove both of them. Once I drove the axis, I was sold. It handled much better and the surf wave was bigger with a longer and cleaner pocket, not to mention the MB didn't feel as sturdy on the water if that makes any sense. Good luck to you

Axis and Malibu boats are super beginner friendly on a wakeboard. My A24 is perfectly clean down to 18mph empty or even when I add bow ballast to get the bow down at that slow speed. Axis are probably the best at not being side to side weight sensitive as well. As far as learning to jump and beginners. There's a couple things you can look at. You can keep them short 50-60ft and work on technique like line tension, eyes up, standing tall and not "jumping" to get air, and handle position. You could do the same at long line but I would not encourage the beginner to try and go W2W on their first few days. At long line with a beginner you can practice all the above techniques but have them land somewhere in the middle around the prop wash so they don't start casing the second wake and jamming their knees into their chest. I'm more of a short line for beginners when I teach. To each their own but I stress baby steps, technique, and control. No sense in going all out "hold my beer" on the first day to tear an ACL or MCL.
