Just wanting to know how far back do you guys wakeboard. And would you shorten up to learn to clear the wake. New to all of this so trying to learn the tricks to help my kids have fun.

Yes, i think beginners should start with a shorter line and slower speed at first. I learned my wake to wake jumps with a 55' line around 20.6mph. After I was consistent and landing in the flats, I lengthened the line to 60' and bumped up the speed to 22mph.

The last thing you want is for a beginner to charge the wake at 80' @25mph. Getting the basics down and the proper form early on will make the progression that much better.

Yes shortening the rope and reducing speed when learning is suggested. If you guys are just learning i would look for a reputable instructor to come out to ride with you. We had an instructor out last week to help my kids with some issues they were having. In a couple sets he had them squared away. I told my wife that it probably saved me several tanks of gas and endless hours of trying to figure out how to correct the issues. Money well spent and it kept them from further reinforcing bad habits or incorrect form.

My gf has been practicing at clearing the wake. I put her at 55' @ 21.7 - 22 mph with the wedge up and stock ballast full.

I typically ride at 70' @ 23mph. I need to go out to 75' but I have been refusing to cause I am still working at getting my toeside w2w consistant. I ride with the wedge up or down depending on my mood and maybe 300lbs in the rear ballast bags, all stock ballast full, and arrow sac full.

Badgalaxie,

Hop of learnwake.com for a month. It is the best 10 bucks you will ever spend. I did it and it has helped me out a lot.

Dezul my older son was having toe side inconsistency issues and the instructor said to drop some ballast because the taller wake was more difficult for beginner to stay on the proper edge all the way up the wake

@Bad if they are just learning the Axis wake will be clean at speeds as low as 16-17mph with no ballast.

Staying on edge is not the issue. Getting a hard enough edge is the issue. I am going to practice some of the toe side edging techniques from learnwake.com this weekend. I am pretty confident I can get it pretty quickly. The last few times I felt like I have lost the edge while going into the wake and the board breaks loose.

Funny that you said that SDUKES. My toe side officially got consistent after I started hitting it with less weight. Also, I think it's better to learn with stock ballast instead of slamming the boat and filling everything anyway. Sure you can use a huge wake as a handicap but if you get your fundamentals and pop down on a smaller wake, you'll be sitting pretty when you start adding to it. Plus too much weight with a short line and slow speed can be counterproductive.
