I am wanting to try my first back roll soon. What length should I ride at? Wedge up or down? I tried the tantrum a couple of times last week and think I would be better at a backroll. The tantrum requires some balls to hit the wake hard while positioning it to trip you. My rotator cup is sore now. Any tips on rope length behind my boat? Wedge up or down?

I teach all my students load and release in the flats and then a 1 wake backroll before going wake 2 wake. Learnwake and the book have excellent segments on this. Or grab a lesson from your local wakeboard coach.

Agree with ridebutter. This is a good video to help get your mind right.

I have seen that video about a dozen times. I know I can get the load and release motion in flat water. I doubt I can do the flat water backroll though. My main concern is it required to do the flat water backroll before trying the one wake backroll? Also, any suggestion on speed, line length, and wake size and shape when starting to try this?

I highly recommend the flatwater back roll first. The point is not for you to land it. If you end up on your butt, that's ok. I would ride your normal boat speed. For trying the one Wake roll I would let the Line out maybe another 5 feet as long as the wake is clean there to give you more room to land in the middle.

I tried my first backroll 4 years ago going like 20 mph and took it one wake just to get the feel of the "flip". Slowing the boat down to 20 made the wake lippy and wide so you land in the middle. Chances are that youll land on the board the first time doing this. One of the most important tips I can give is to wait for the pop before putting your ear to your shoulder. Nothing is worse than throwing the flip off the wake too early and spinning really fast and really low. Pop, then ear to shoulder.

Any tips on doing the flatwater backroll first? Do I just build line tension then release it?

dezul .... go to the learn wake website and look at the video requests by users there was one on there for air back rolls that was good to watch. I can do back rolls regular and switch and I can't do air back rolls ..... like ride said its not so much you need to land your air back roll, but if you can just get around you at least know you have the right motion/set up ... if you decide to skip this I don't think its a big deal just start your one wake attempts

edit: the videos are called analysis

one I was talking about

Best advise is to just do it. Once you try it once and realized how easy the falls are youll want to go wake to wake with it. Keep your egde to the top of the wake and pop first. Also, you dont need a super hard cut into the wake. Just steady with that progresive edge. I think you're overthinking it. I do this a lot. Youll be good to go after that first attempt.
