I am finally picking up my new T22 tomorrow! I saw them water test my boat at the factory and the tester pretty much hammered the Sh*t out of it! There is a recommended break in procedure in the indmar manual...but does it really need it? These modern motors are made much better than the motors from 20 years ago, so is the break-in procedure just a cover my ass disclaimer? Or is it something that really needs to be followed? I have rebuilt several motorcycle 2 strokes and I always broke them in. My last new car I did them same, so you could say that I think breaking it in is the right thing to do as far as long term performance of the engine. What do you guys think? I saw a lot of new boats on here...is everyone following break in procedures?

I have been wondering the same thing. Our dealer says it's a good idea to not run high rpms consistently but then I think about all the boats they use for demo boats. They don't get broke in but still carry the same warranty. They have an A20, A22 and an A24 that they use as demo boats. I am at just over 3 hours now and am going to start dialing in the surf wave. I will probably hold off on slamming the boat and wakeboarding.

Was suggested to me not to run wedge or any ballast for a while. Maybe 20 hours, I cant really remember.

Also heard today that some of these boats are experiencing carbon build-up due to heavy weight and low speeds. Mainly for those surfing a lot. Was suggested that I run it around 40mph for 5 -10 min to burn it off.

I just spent the last 15 min or so reading different threads from forums and Wikipedia and some other articles on the web. I think the general consensus is to vary throttle and load the engine, but don't "lug" it or overload it at all. Some short full throttle bursts are ok. you just want to "work" the engine slowly to get a good seat on the rings for maximum power out of the engine with the least amount of oil use.

My dad has a friend that has built racing engines for the past 30 years and is one of the smartest guys he knows (masters degree in electrical engineering). I'll try and get his take tomorrow and report back.

I was in the same situation this time last year and here are my thoughts after everything I read. I think the key is varying the speed/rpm at least for the first few hours. Definitely don't want to cruise across your entire lake at the same speed right at first. I can't remember exactly but I kept the rpms pretty low for the first 2-3 hours. Then I gradually increased once I got into the 4-5 hour range and started doing some harder runs. I didn't weight it down too heavy until 10+ hours but prefer to error on the side of caution.

I did very similar to Jayman. I don't know for sure that it was necessary, but after signing that paper work under a very large number, I figured I better take care of it

Seems like some great advice on here. After hearing what the factory puts them through once you get about 5hrs on it, it's let her eat!!!!

I did the break in exactly how the engine manual said. 10 hours of no wakeboarding, just driving around. then hours 10-20 I started riding with little to no ballast. Then after 20 hours I let the big dog eat…. I am not sure it was necessary, but I wanted to error on the side of caution knowing I was going to load my boat up from that point on.

BREAK IT IN .... to much money to risk it
