Hi everyone, it's my first time posting. I recently ordered a new A22, and it has arrived at the dealer about five hours away. I had been told by the dealer that my 2012 Toyota four runner would be fine for towing, but I've since noticed that the weight of the boat and trailer combined is close to the 5000lb towing capacity of my rig. Is anyone towing with a similar rig, and am I ok? After I get it home from the dealer, I'll generally be towing it about a max of 70 miles to a cottage on the wkds. Am I ok with my current setup?

You're probably going to be over 5000 with gas, supplies and company. How are the roads you'll be traveling on? Hilly?

Congratulations on the new boat and welcome to the Axis forums.

You'll find a similar thread here - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1655. You might consider a transmission cooler. You might also want to figure out the insurance implications if you were to have an accident while towing. Towing capacity usually assumes the vehicle weight plus driver and gas. 3 passenger and gear could add another 500 - 700 lbs.

Hello~

I have a 2012 A22 and also tow it with a 2012 Toyota 4Runner SR5. I was worried about my towing capacity (5000 lbs.) as well; however, after talking to my Axis dealer and the Toyota dealer, here is what I can tell you:

1) Dry weight of your boat (3600 lbs.) plus the trailer (1200 lbs.) puts you at approximately 4800 lbs. Gas is 8.34 lbs. per gallon so if you tow when your 48 gallon tank is full, add another 400 lbs. for a grand total of appropriately 5200 lbs...minus any gear, humans, or pets:)

2) Axis dealer felt good about my towing capacity and has sold similar Axis/Malibu boats to folks who tow with 4Runners. The towing package that comes standard is pretty good after crawling under my SUV and taking inventory.

3) I was honest with the Toyota dealer and gave them all of the above specs. They told me Toyota specifically downgrades the towing capabilities of all their SUVs and trucks so that people don't push the limits too far. He admitted the actual towing capability is closer to 5600-5800 lbs.

If you take it slow and don't drive too aggressively, you should be just fine. I rarely go over 60 mph and tow my boat 20 miles round trip every time we ride. There are lots of hills but I just take it slow and so far, so good.

Good lick and enjoy your new ride!!!

Thanks for all your replies guys, I really appreciate them, and it makes me feel a lot better about what I'm in for. It's all mostly flat where I am, so I'll try it out and see how it goes.
