Hey guys, new to the forum and boat scene and have a couple questions. I'm in the market for my first boat and am looking for an '11 or '12 A20. I know that when they first started producing axis boats, cats were an option because they were only required in CA. After doing some more research I've seen that the fairly recent epa regulations say that all boats have to be sold with cats, correct? Can somebody tell me when this went into effect? I thought I saw it was in 2010 or something, but also thought I saw some 2011 axis's without cats. What I'm really getting at is, if I was to buy a boat out of state that doesn't have cats, will it be a problem to get it registered in CA? There may be a simple answer that there are no A20's that exist without cats so this problem could be totally irrelevant.

Thanks Tyler

Mine is a 2010 and there was a tag on the engine that said something along the lines about being not for use in CA waterways or something along those lines, or a tag that said not legal for sale or register in CA, I think all 2012 boats no matter the manufacturer are required to have cats. Either way you may have trouble registering a non cat boat.

Ya, I know all the '13's now have cats. Does anyone have an A20 without cats? I figured it would be a problem to get it registered without cats since it was built after the law was enacted. Well hopefully somebody can confirm my previous questions, or that the nationwide cat regulation was in effect before the A20, so that every A20 built has cats.

Non-CAT engines are still listed as an option in the 2011 brochure - http://www.axiswake.com/downloads/axis_specs_2011.pdf - but that may have been for non-US sales. My understanding is that the EPA regulations applied to 2010 engines, thus you could have 2010 boat with a 2009 manufactured engine without CATs.

Any specific reason you're looking for a non-CAT boat? It's an extra cost, but you do benefit from reduced CO.

I'm not looking for a non cat boat. I was asking if anyone had one to see if it was even possible for me to buy an A20 without cats. If all A20's produced have cats installed, because the regulations were in place before they started being produced, any boat I buy shouldn't be a problem to get registered in CA. But if they did produce an A20 without cats, I could potentially be looking at purchasing one, thus me having a problem getting it registered. I'm just trying to determine if this is a relevant issue I need to give some attention too. As you all know, axis boats are somewhat rare so I'm looking all across the country for boats that fits my specs. I just don't want to be looking at 2011 and find out that everyone out of CA bought them without cats, which would eliminate them from my purchasing options.

Non cat was an option for 2012, but not for sale in the US. So that's one more safe year for you. Not sure before that.

I have seen a 2011 A20 with the standard 335 hp non catalyst engine in it. If that's what you're looking for, they're out there.

My 2011 does not have the cats. Tennessee boat.

Side note, cats don't cut CO, they cut unburned hydrocarbons.

Ok thats exactly what I don't want, that boat would be impossible to get registered in CA. Cool, this is just what I needed to know. So when looking at '11's I need to check for cats, but all the '12's should have them.

Thanks for the help guys.
