Okay, so i was sold on a Sierra with 5.3, but then drove a 2006 F150 FX4 with 5.4 and liked the layout of the interior and the space. Anyone towing with one of these? If so how she holding up? what you think about the mpg? This one had level kit and 34". was pretty nice I must say.
I am not sure what years it was, but somewhere in the mid 2000's the 5.4L were horrible engines and needed major work when they hit 140, 000 miles. The best thing to do is research some truck forums. The only reason I know this was cause we just bought my little brother his first vehicle and noticed a lot of the mid 2000's had rebuilt engines. Dont take my word as fact. Just something I heard from a Ford guy.
Dezul is correct the 5.4 triton had some serious issues from 2004 to 2006. I owned a 2005 and found this out the hard way. The biggest issues that I am aware of are 1) the injectors stick open and flood the cylinder which in turn will cause the catalytic converter to melt when the raw fuel hits it. Had this happen three separate times. Ford will not authorize the dealers to replace all the injectors. Only the ones that fail. Which leaves the others to fail later. They do have a replacement program to cover the vehicle until 120k miles I believe. Getting a dealer to diagnose and replace can be a pain in the azz. 2) They also have issues with their spark plugs seizing in the block. When you go to replace them there is a specific process to follow. I don't think this is nearly as big a problem as the injectors. Check out
www.f150forum.com or search a specific year and problems.
Having said all that I did enjoy the roomy interior. I towed a 7500lb travel trailer and it did well. The suspension is set up nicely for towing. I would get about 14mpg with a leveling kit and 33s. Not sure about mpg while towing. I was always afraid to look. If you are looking for a used f150 I would start with 2007 and up.
