its not the tach but the software that it uses to communicate with the pcm and the depth finder transducer, the only symptoms you would see in the way the boat works is either the cruise control would not work or the service required message would pop up at startup if you didn't key up fast enough, and it supposedly only affected early 2010 models with depth finders factory installed,

THANKS for bumping this post up to the top. I had missed it and have this problem intermittently. Problem has been getting worse (because the water is low this time of year and I use the depth finder more). Now I know how to avoid this and Axis is sending me a replacment tach. THANK YOU ALL!

Ya it always happened in mine because my info panel always stays on depth, I'm scared to get in too shallow water, sure don't want to hit anything. The only time I change it off depth is to take a quick glance at everything then it's back on. Now it works great thanks to Matt and Bob @ Axis. My dealer could never seem to talk to anyone at Malibu who was familiar with the update but Bob and Matt hooked me up!! Thanks guys!!

Does anyone know if this problem exists with 2009 models? I had a 2009 out for a sea trial and cruise control wouldn't engage.

I had cycled through the info panel (I don't know if I left it on the depth finder) prior to testing cruise control. The owner turned the battery switch off and then back on and it was fine after that. We didn't change the info panel after the battery switch cycle.

Sounds like the exact symptoms to me. I think you answered your own question. Axis was good about replacing mine, but you might want to check on if its still under warranty, and if not how much to replace it.
