Update - took a mechanic buddy out tonight. He is fairly certain it is a spark knock. We did not bring tools, in a hurry, but will start with the new plugs - he feels fairly confident that should do it. He brought and mechanical stethoscope and listened along the valve covers. I will inform him of the exhaust leak suggestion Wayne and see what he says.
The leak, definitely shaft seal - it was pouring out, almost like a a faucet being on really low. Will probably get some packing and some big wrenches for when I head out next time, hopefully I can figure out how to get it corrected.
Thanks for all the help thus far. Any other ideas please let me know. I will update after installing plugs and test driving again.

Update...
Replaced plugs and test drove the boat again last night. When I changed the plugs, they were fairly sutted, due to it running rich, which it has been doing since the start of this. The noise was still there and my mechanic buddy thought it to possibly be a fuel injector problem or possible camshaft, or internal. The motor while at idle sort of sounds as though it is "hitting a lick" as we say in the south. The ticking or skipping noise that I was originally referring to is most apparent while giving the motor full throttle, but can be heard from 1/3 throttle and up. It seems as though the motor is not burning all the fuel, and running rich.
We checked the distributer cap and the leads were corroded so we cleaned them. That seemed to help some but hard to really tell. We checked the map and it was working, and we then checked timing buy adjusting the distributer cap and it was working. While we were just limping back to the dock he decided to check fuel injector leads by pulling them off. These were 2 that appeared to be failing – 1 on each side, as in when we unplugged them, you did not hear the motor change at all. I believe his diagnostic of this was that the injectors could be stuck open or closed.
PS. Since we were adjusting the distrubuter cap, I have service required alarm now. How do I get it to stop or reset the computer?
Going to work on it some more tonight. Any additional thoughts are appreciated.

Have you tried a new distributor cap?
They are known to develop an internal crack and then arc to different cylinders.

So we found the problem... No compression on number 8 cylinder. Got it broke down and one of the valves was pretty rough on the edges, and the other was a little worn too. Going to get the heads reworked and machined/replaced, and put it back t together [img][img][/img][/img]and see how she does. Will update soon.
Does anyone know the proper Fel-Pro gasket kit? I've narrowed it to 17208 or 17214 My motor is the Indmar AR 335 5.7L.

Just ordered head and intake gaskets after extensive searching. AC Delco Intake gasket and Mahle head gasket, along with new plugs. Hope to get the heads done and parts in before the weekend.

Finally... seeing the light gents. Got the heads back, motor rebuilt, and took it to the water. It ran great, for about an hour, then had a slight skip at low RPM. After retracing our steps, pulling valve covers and adjusting valves, we finally found the skip issue - plug wire was arcing onto the exhaust manifold through the wire. We were on at the dock, scratching our heads and decided to cut the lights out and thats when we could see the arc. New plug wires are on the way (along with cap and rotor) and, fingers crossed, I should be good to go.
