It took the dealer about 20 minutes to fix the issue. The ring I was referring to that came loose is a wiper seal. When it came off, water got inside the ram that pushes the surf gate out and shorted it out. They replaced the ram and all is good. Took it out this weekend and everything is back to normal.

My dealer did the recall repair on mine last week. I was not having any problems with the surfgate but they made the repair anyway. I took the boat out yesterday and they went crazy right was left, left was right warning bells going off on the dash then they both came out stuck. Then it would say surfgate locked I tried all the the recalibration steps and nothing worked. The good news for me is I have a good dealer and know they will take care of it. One of there guys is making a trip to see me today to diagnose the issue.

Sounds like they plugged the actuators up backwards.

For the record... I called Axis/Malibu customer service and they assist there is no recall or bulletin.

I have a '16 T22 and my surfgate gets stuck out at least 50% of the time on the port side (starboard or goofy surfer). After the surfer falls and the boat stops it starts beeping with the fault code. We have to push the button on the gauge, put the surfgate to neutral, and restart the boat to reset it. I don't really want to take it to the dealer as I have company almost all summer long and can't really afford the downtime. I had to wait three weeks just to get an appointment for the breakin service.

Anyone know a fix to this and if it's something an indy mechanic or myself can do?

From what I have heard there is an updated IO module that take care of this.

Maybe your dealer would order one and let you swap it out?

Any idea how easy/hard it is to change the IO module?

Okay, I got my boat back. They replaced the "relay" on that side and said that should take care of it. I'm not sure what happened to the relay. We'll see how it works tomorrow.

It wasn't the relay. Now they've replaced the ram. We'll see how that goes.

Clearly this is an issue with Axis/Malibu - numerous forums on this topic out there.

Out on a week long houseboat trip and I too am having issues with the surf gates - 2015 T22 with 60 hours. I tried all the computer fixes people listed (including what my dealer suggested) and it went from the right being stuck in the out position to the the right and left being stuck in the out position. Nothing happened with shutting engine off, or getting up to speed, or playing with the toggle switches, either.

Per dealer suggestion, was able to manually unbolt the gates and screw one of the rams back to the in position so we could surf still...of course could not do any wakeboarding until we screwed the other ram back in - did this numerous times - have it down to about 6 minutes per side - could be faster but a genius engineered it so that the bolts for the ram and ram mounting plate/surf gate actually run into each other. Luckily we never dropped a bolt or nut.

Pulled the control module out from down low behind the engine, a little work to get to but not bad...couldn't detect any voltage passing through. My guess is that the relay module is the issue. Chinese relay modules fail all the time (not just these, I am in home automation and I/O modules are notorious for failing).

Also thought, hey we can just buy one of these things, overnight it to the marina, and install our selves...wrong, the manufacturer of the Ram wont let you buy direct, actually says on their website for that part number you have to contact Malibu.

These are fun things to play with on vacation (sarcasm) - but at least there was a work around.

Drove it 300 miles back to my dealer and dropped it off - will let you know how it goes.

As expected, it was the surf gate relay module (aka control module) - dealer replaced no problem and ordered me a backup (I am not going out for a week again only to have the same issue and not be able to fix it properly). Headed back out for 10 days on the houseboat in 2 weeks - we'll see how it goes.
