Not sure how the real surf gate is compared to my ghetto gate but if I have too much weight on non-surf side the gate gets too far under water and washes out lip of wave. Moving people/ballast to surf side cleans it up.

what speeds do you run at? I rode my friends ghetto gate the other day at 10.6 and it had no push to it. At 10.8 and 11 it started to feel a lot better. I never run mine slower than 10.8. Most of the time I run it at 11+.

10.6 to 11.8 depends on how many are in the boat. Usually 11.4 to 11.6 is the speed when it's just my wife and I.
