I believe we are all using the Perko switch correctly as well as others adding ACR's. I personally would never trust my alternator to fully charge or maintain my batteries, especially if you are running 3 or more batteries (even 2 battery systems IF you like to float for a few hours and only have short rides back to the ramp). A good onboard charger is the best answer for proper battery maintenance. I'm current using a 50 amp Probautic onboard charger by ProMariner.

I have one good starting battery and one good battery that will run my stereo. I never run both A and B (two different types of batteries. I usually keep it on A when driving around if I park and listen to music I switch to B. I then charge B before I go out again.

BTW - I have had an alternator go out. You don't get warning until your voltage is way low. by that time you may have about 5 min (depending on batt type) before your boat stops.

Wow it seem like everyone has a different way of doing it thanks for all the posts i well keep everyone option in mind and figure out what I will do. Thanks again for the tips it's great to hear them!
