I have the wedge off of my 96 Malibu. I wonder how much different it is then what we have now.

What do you mean "honestly rates the wedge"?

Well the wedge is ok I guess is you run a dry boat but if you start loading your boat that wedge is like dragging an anchor along the lake and does any one think it makes much difference maybe steeper wake but is the steeper wake better?

It just depends on what type of pop you like. It's all personal preference. Some like a wake that has more lip...and some don't.

Tassie, why would a free floating auto-set wedge act differently if the boat is weighted or not? I assume plenty of people slam their boats and use the wedge, but I haven't been able to experiment yet. Should get through the break in hours this weekend..

Tassie, the wedge will obviously feel like you're "dragging an anchor" if you are already slammed with ballast. Afterall, the wedge is reportly adding enough DOWNFORCE to be the equivalent of 800-1000lbs of ballast WITHOUT having extra sacs. It's only doing its job.

JayMan.... I do not know the reason for it, but once you start adding a lot of weight, the wedge reaches a point of diminishing returns. My buddies 06 VLX (very similar hull to an A22) had about 4000 lbs in it or so, and we did not use the wedge. One day his wedge pin fell out and while turning, the wedge would accidently deploy. You could see instantly the change in wake shape. The size didn't increase, but the top 5-6" steepened and there was about 2-3" of foam (even at 24 mph).

So for some, throwing the wedge into a heavily ballasted boat would be okay if they prefer a real steep lip, but most of the guys I have seen run 4K+ of weight do not use the wedge (there are some exceptions... I think that trever mauer and josh twelker before he rode for master craft would run 5k+ and the wedge.. not sure though.

Once you get to the 3500-4000 range, the wake starts to steepen up considerably with every pound added. Like previously said, it is all preference.
