Hi all. I'm an old surfer dude and last spring my son, 23, and I bought a A20 prototype with surfgate.
We've had an awesome season with more to come. Just wondering if anyone has a A20 with more
ballast than the suggested 2400lbs. We want more wake. 800 stock and additional 800 rear, 950 front

I'm confused...you say you have an A20 prototype with surfgate? Do you mean you have an A20 with a prototype surfgate?

When you say you have 800 rear, are you saying you have 400 on each side? That's how the rear weight is talked about...each side, not as one total number. You definitely need more rear weight or a bigger crew to compensate. At minimum I'd go 750's in each rear locker but you can go 800's or 900's as well. The 950 bow sack is not even close to filling 950 but you could play with and extra sack in the center of the floor if you don't have anymore than 3 in your crew. If you have more than 3-4 crew then a center floor sack just gets in the way.

Not bashing the A20 because in my opinion it's the best wakeboard wake in the 20 range with a fun surf wave. However, there's a limit to what a 20' hull can displace for a surf wave and that's where the bigger, heavier hulls have the advantage. You're are going to just have to experiment. 2400lbs is nothing for an A20 hull to handle. You can easily add 3500-4000lbs if you wanted but there's also a point of diminishing returns by getting a worse wave by going too much ballast. Figuring out the surf wave is much harder than the wakeboard wake. Good luck

Also a balance of weight is equally important; front to back ratio and you can also very "slightly" list it to the surf. Depending on how many people are in the boat, which side you surf on (port is always better) can always make a differrence. Oh ya then there's speed! Play with it ... but if you're looking for a huge wake ... like AJ said, you will need a bigger boat.

Thanks for the reply. You are correct in that we have a 2013 A20 that was the prototype for the 2014 models with surfgate. I figured displacement is key but it's nice to know we can go with bigger rear sacks. We had 500's in the rear and when the boat went back to the factory to chase down some hull leaks they switched them out for the 400's. Not sure why. Something about too much rear weight because of the heavier 409 motor.

I don't have a prototype surfgate on my '13 A20, lucky jerk lol, but I agree with what everyone else said. Upgraded motor too?? Which prop are you running?

Not sure which prop we are running. It wasn't listed on the invoice however when we picked up the boat at Lake Naciemento Johnny Steg
went out with us. After driving and surfing behind it he said he was going to request the motor in his next boat. We looked for about a year for a boat and yah we lucked out big time. Only things not on the boat were swivel racks and the premium sound pack. Killer price too.

Prop specs are on the hub of the prop where the prop nut is. It'll have diameter/pitch and model number

That's a really strange prop to be running. My suggestion would be to get Sumo 900s in the rear of the boat and to get either a Acme 2315,2419 or 2079 prop.

You'll be well on your way to a baller wave. The A20 is PLENTY capable of throwing a good wave.

You should be able to just switch the bags out since they are already setup in the boat. Just get the bags and the bag fittings. Leave your current Black/red fittings on the hoses. Most people are going with the 2315 or 2419 props from what I have been seeing bought at boardstop.com. More 2419s in recent months.
