So after a failed buy on a 2011 A20, I think we might just go new. I am very picky on the condition of the boat, and I suppose If I want it to be right, and in the condition I expect, new is the way to go. That said, I still am on a tight (ish) budget. It looks like I can save about $7500-8500 by going with a new 2013 over an ordered 2014 with SG. My question is it REALLY worth it. I do surf more than wakeboard anymore but the 2013 that I demoed had plenty of surf wake for me, and I rode just fine with the wedge and factory ballast with 2 people on the port side. Thoughts?

We are looking at ordering a 2014 A22 with SG. Reasons we are choosing SG over non SG. 1) Wife doesn't fee comfortable in a listed boat. We know it's not dangerous but she just doesn't like it. Especially driving. 2) My boys are really digging wakeboarding and it is just to easy to fill all the ballast and wakeboard, then use SG to surf. No ballast change or moving bags in the boat. Just hit the switch and go. 3) Now that Axis has SG it will devalue all the older models. This is my opinion and I know there are others that disagree. 4) When we demoed the Axis with SG, the dealer pushed me to transition from port to starboard while he changed the gate. I haven't ever surfed backside (read as I am not very good) but it was a lot of fun being able to go back and forth without having to stop.
Either way you go, you will be in an awesome boat that should provide a lot of fun.

^^^^agreed. I have one and we love it. My wife was the same way. It's worth the extra money.

I get that it makes it easier to make a surf wake, but does it make the surf wake better than simply weighting the boat properly?

YES! I have an nearly unlimited supply of bags and we could not get the same wave that we get with my strap-on Surfgate. Before Surfgate, I had full P-N-P w/1100 rears, an additional 900 ontop of the bow seats, and a 750 on the side seat, NO wedge. Now with SO-Surfgate and I just use the pnp bags under the seats and can use the wedge now with much better results. {Check the DIY section of the forum if you are not familiar with all the "poor-man gate" options}.
With my version of surfgate it a totally different wave shape too. Wider, longer, less steep, and cleaner. I no longer need a new swimdeck!
Im sure DTB can answer your question specifically to a 2014, but just putting out there that it is legit and there are options for older AXIS boats.

With surfgate YES (before it was just surf side). Well as "full" as space and the overflows will allow. I would guesstimate 85% full.
So adding the extra side including the hard tank figure +1100 and another 1200 for the wedge! More than what I had sitting on the seats i guess.
PLUS there is much more room for human ballast now! I used to limit to 3 passengers sitting on top of the bags, now I can carry 9 no problem. More the better!!

I have a 2014. If anyone is interested....I can trace my surfgates on a board and maybe show some measurements online of it.
