I'm looking at picking up a new a22 and after doing some more research I'm concerned about my tow vehicle capacity. It is a 2005 toyota 4Runner with a tow capacity of 5000lbs. A new vehicle is not really an option so this may put off my new boat purchase.

The A22 weighs 3600 lbs plus the trailer (800 lbs???) plus fuel???

The boat will only be towed twice a year (spring and fall), baring any mech issues. The trip is approx. 100 miles (15 miles on gravel) and is fairly flat.

What do you guys think? Bad idea? Or ok if I take it slow, dont have a lot of fuel and dont load up the 4runner.

I had a silverado 1500 when I got my boat, I pulled it home 7 hours and decided that it wouldn't cut it for the long haul traded for powerstoke. I think your fine on short trips but not sure on the long ones.

I think you'll be fine if you only need to tow it twice a year, 100 miles is nothing

I think the trailer runs about 1100 lbs and with no fuel you'd be under 5000. Full fuel would push you over that.

I don't think you'd have any problems getting going since it is flat, but I'd be most concerned with having to stop quickly. Given that you're approaching the max for the vehicle you take it real easy. It might be worth stopping by the dealer to put a boat on the vehicle to see what it does to the front end. If the front end is coming up a weight distribution hitch may help.

I pull mine with a pathfinder and when i have to get on the interstate, I just stay between 60 and 65 for safety.

Ya I agree. I pulled mine with my wife's pathfinder and it did fine. I ran down the highway at 70. Only thing I would worry about is how steep your loading dock is, and getting it out of the water.

Make sure you get the dual axel trailer.

If you have experience towing, go slow, give you self braking distance you will likely be fine. I towed mine with an v1 xterra twice. I used to have that 4runner. I take back what i said unless you have the v6 4runner. Turn off overdrive when towing and get a transmission cooler. I installled mine in the driveway, but even if you pay someone its cheap insurance against a big repair bill.

I've pulled mine with the wifes Pathfinder then we traded for a GMC Acadia and both do fine.

Thanks everyone. I feel better about it now, and I think I will get a transmission intercooler installed. Since I only have to make the trip twice a year, I am going to have an empty vehicle and take it easy, especially on the gravel.

Has anyone used an equalizer hitch on one of these trailers? I guess the thought is that it will help spread the tongue weight to the front of the SUV, which will improve the ride. Maybe I’m over thinking all of this, but I do want to be safe.

I’m guessing the tongue weight is about 500lbs (10% of trailer load)
