What is everyone's opinion on extended warranties?

I've gotten to the point of buying them on any major purchase if offered. Cars, appliances etc. Would have gotten one on my 15 A20 if one had been available. I would have used it many times so far. Can't image if we had gotten a Malibu with their touch screen and such.
So many computer modules and wiring looms in everything today. Most of the time I have ended up using them and its usually on a computer board or circuit. New Maytag washer used the warranty twice already. Used it once so far right after our car went past the factory warranty mileage. Good insurance because they sure don't make them liked they used to. Mechanics Yes, Technology No.
