Had a little mishap while putting the boat on the trailer the other day. About to attempt a gel coat repair. I bought the color match gel coat repair kit from colorspectrum.com and iboats.com. does anyone have any tips or tricks. I forgot to take a picture before i started the prep work. But so far i have cleaned the area with acetone to remove any wax or material to help the gel coat attach and have dremmeled around the area.

I attempted a gel coat repair on my swim platform with filler and the spectrum color match gel coat kit...didn't turn out so hot and this past weekend folks cracked the area again with their wakeboard fins. Kind of lame how the swim platform tapers at the ends and provides not enough area for larger boards. Make sure and use low grit sandpaper (like 1000) at the end to get a nice finish. with that being said who cares if it is way under the hull and not that visible. Best of luck.

Quick update. I got my patch kit in the mail and attempted to repair the gel coat. Its not 100% perfect as i sanded a couole spots to low and exposed the some of my metal flake. But its better than having the fiberglass exposed and at least the only time you will see it is when its in the trailer. I do have some patch left over so after the season is over i might attempt to make it look better. Hey at least i tried...lol

So did you do a patch on metal flake? I heard it is really tough to get the metal flake to match up when you patch it. If so what was the trick?

No the metal flake was the bottom coat. I patched the blue gel coat. They must have put the metal flake on first and then the blue. I am glad i didnt have to patch the metal flake.

When my LSV got hit by a jetski; it hit silver metal flake. $20k and 4 attempts later (by an Austin Pro Shop) and they never could make it look right...
