Hello All,

I have a question about what batteries are best for replacement. I searched the forum but couldn't find much on this topic. I have a 2010 Axis A22 that came with one battery. An exide 1000 cranking amp starter battery and that was it. It did come with a perko dual battery selector switch but no second battery. The battery is not holding a charge anymore so time to replace and also add a second battery. Should I do a like for like replacement with the Exide starter battery? What should I add for the second battery? I read the factory setup now is the starter battery and a deep cycle battery for second. If this is the case should I use a marine starter battery 1000 cranking amps and a second deep cycle with 1000 cranking amps? I will also be adding an on board charger/maintainer so I can plug in while on boat lift. I don't think I want to spend the money for optima batteries but what are others using?

Thanks in advance.

No one uses Optima blue tops anymore since they changed manufacturers quite sometime ago and performance just isn't the same for the money you are paying. Plus blue tops only give you 50-55 amp hours of use. They are overrated for marine use. Since you said you wanted to go a more economical route just get you a couple Interstate SRM-29 and a couple group 27 boxes to fit them in (don't know if you're running 29's, 27's or 24's currently). Each SRM29 is 96 amp hours and 800 cranking. I have 3 in my boat and used them in my previous as well. These are wet cell batteries so you'll have to check them every few months for fluid levels. If you want AGM style batteries I'd do Deka Seamates. I had 4 of those in two of my previous boats and loved them. Can't go wrong with either but the Interstate SRM29's are very popular in wakeboats.

Thanks for the info. I currently have a group 24 battery and battery box. Would the SRM-24 Deep cycle with 550 CCA be alright to use? It has much less CCA than my current exide. I already have 2 group 24 battery boxes but if it makes more sense to upgrade to a larger group 27 battery I could pick up new boxes.

I would go group 29 over 27 and definitely over 24 just because of more capacity for barely any extra money. Don't bother looking for group 29 boxes as 29's fit in 27 boxes.

Correction: in my original reply I said the SRM29 has 96 amp hours, that's actually the SRM27. The SRM29 has 125 amp hours. That's why I'd jump to the 29 over the 27 for about $15 price difference.
