I just took ownership of a new T22 Axis and took it out for the first time today. It was pretty awesome. The main issue I have is with the paint. There does not seem to be any gel coat and the paint scratches very easy. I have owned other boats before and never had a problem like this.
Is this normal for Axis boats?
Thanks. Jimmy

Not sure what you mean. There is no paint on these boats. The gel coat is the glossy colored surface you see, it's about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Behind that is the fiberglass which is very ugly. Yes, gel scratches easily, make sure you keep a good coat of wax on.

Calling gel coat "paint" has always been a pet peeve of mine. Anyways, I'm on my 2nd Axis and never had an issue with thin gel coat. Are you referring to swirl marks in the gel coat or actual scratches from debris in the water, rubbing a dock, or someone hitting their wakeboard/surfboard on the gel coat. I've always kept good wax on it a couple times per year with a DA polisher and use a spray wax every month as a touch up.

Thank you for the reply. I am sorry about the terminology of the paint vs fiber glass and gel coat. I just got the boat a couple days ago and was breaking in the boat and probably got 10 scratches on the interior of the boat just being used very lightly. I could gently run my fingernail against the boat and make a scratch mark. Never have I had a boat that scratches this easily which makes me think something is wrong. I am worried what will happen after I allow kids in the boat. No telling what it will look like.

Fine scratches can be handled with some marine 3M Finesse-It. Megiuars makes a good marine product to fill fine scratches

Is it black or a dark color gel? Previous boats white? Dark ones will show scratches better.

Sounds to me like maybe your dealer gave it to you with a good coat of wax. I think you are just scratching the wax if you can do it that easily. Otherwise, I agree it sounds like something is really wrong. Gel is not that soft.

I have a black hull and inside. Mine doesn't scratch easily. I will have some white marks on the hull from hitting small sticks, but they're easily taken out with 3m marine products and a porter cable buffer. Sounds like what Ferral said. Can you wash an area with dawn/water, dry it , and then reproduce the scratches? (The dawn will strip the wax)
