Looking for opinions please my dealer has a new 2013 A20 without surfgates for under 50K. The best deal I can get on a 2014 with surfgates is 56+K.

We do it all we still ski, wakeboard and do some surfing

Are the surfgates really worth t we a recreational users I have been told that you can achieve the same wake on one side with the 2013 boat with ballast and bags but the surfgate allows you to switch sides on the fly. If we can truly get the same wake on one side without surfgates that would be ok with me.

Any comments would be appreciated

I can't speak to the difference in waves, so I will let others chime in on that. I can say that unless you plan on keeping this boat for a long time go with SG. Resale will be a lot better in the short term. Especially with more and more boats coming out with surf wave enhancement devices.

I have a 2013 A20. With minimal effort, the wave is great for recreational surfing. It takes only a few minutes to drain the Plug n Play with the Hi-Flo system. So in reality, you're not going to miss much without the surfgate. It'll stiff surf great, it'll just take an extra 5-10 minutes to switch sides.

IMO, resale isn't going to be hit that hard. Plenty of people out there are buying used boats without surfgate. If the price was the same on the 2013 and 2014, it would be a no brainer. But since you're saving yourself the better part of 10k, I'd say that the difference in resale will be negligible, since you're already into the boat for so much less than the 2014.

The owner went to a patent lawyer and they have enough differences between the two to get their own patent on the bolt on design without infringing on malibu's design, that and it's just one guy, selling them for pretty much cost of material and shipping, Malibu would waste more money than it was worth to even think about going after one guy over a few dozen homemade poorgates

He's just helping people get a killer wave without having to upgrade the boat they just purchased, he's doing it all for fun and for the users on this board, I for one appreciate his enthusiasm and effort to help us out who don't want to upgrade to a new boat any time In the foreseeable future, I love my '10 model and don't want to upgrade, my boat is just the way I want it

Don't get me wrong, I love what the guy is doing. I saved a bunch of cash on my boat because it does not have SG. I hope to put together a poorgate of my own soon. BUT Malibu is a public company with shareholders so spending a ton of money to bring the hammer down on a cool guy doing something sweet sounds exactly like a dumb move that publicly owned company would do.

The thing about patent law, is that in order for you to defend your patent effectively, you have to go after everyone big or small.

You have to treat nautique and joe shmo equally. If you don't, nautique can use it against you in court.

It's silly, but that's how it works.

I've seen the patent language though, he has nothing to worry about.

He has a patent pending on his design, that way it's protected for the time being
