Different engine management system, different badging, fuel pressure monitoring, CATs, O2 sensor driven fuel trimming, twin pumps mounted in fuel tank instead of a single on the engine.
I've not measured it but I'd suspect the 2013 motor to be more efficient due to the manner it can trim fuel more actively. Though, as with anything, more stuff = more chance for it to break.
We've not had any issues with 2013 motors, but equally, 2012 was a vintage year in my book. I have customers with in excess of 900 hours on both motors.
