hi all spent many hours looking at these fourms today sold my m/c prostar 190 and am hell bent on buying a axis a20 i have 3 questions. im looking at a 2012 a20 used for 40k$ with no options right now but like everything else i want it all!
1 the 330hp motor is new to me i no its multi port inj but it bothers me that it gets air from a tbi style unit,(why it screams un efficient) Im coming from a lt-1 motor and after i saw the monsoon 350 (big plenum) it got me thinking of longevity and efficiency whats the benefits? btw and i cant find for the life of me a axis a-20 that doesnt have the 330 or 335
2 the boat im looking at now has no options can I add my own plug n play? or would it b easier to upgrade the whole water intake system to the 1 1/8 1100gph system 2013+
3 some a20's have a duel wheel trailer why? ive always had a single wheel whats the benefits 1more wheels to curb slide?
4 the surf gate. what would work better a20 with 900lbs bag in one side or a stock ballast boat with the surf gate on. whats going to throw a better wave?

are axis boats like ktm's just when you bought the latest and greatest the next years boats blow the hell out of the previous models?

1. the 335 base engine is pretty much the exact same engine that all inboard boat manufacturers use, because its tried and true one of the toughest out there, the throttle body is the same one that comes on nearly all late model chevy trucks and suv's that have drive by wire, so its tried and tested tough, I like the intake design and the use of factory GM parts, other than the manifold which was built for marine applications.
2. you can add the pnp yourself and do bigger hoses if you like to do diy, nothing real hard about any of it, but 40k sounds a tad high for a 0 option used A20
3. dual wheel is better if you haul long distances, less load on the wheel bearings and tires, if you live close to your lake a single axle will work out fine
4. stock ballast surf gate probably would not be as good as a listed boat with a 900 in the locker, unless you put pnp bags in the back with surf gate you're spinning your wheels

the only newer model that blows away the others is the '14 that has the surf gate, the 5 previous years had only small cosmetic changes that really never blew away the previous year, just made small improvements, I have a '10 and still love it just as much as I did the day I bought it. Good luck with whatever boat you get!

First, the A20 is a great boat, and since you are coming from a prostar 190, it will feel huge to you.

1. The 335 is bomb proof, it gets incredible gph ratings, and is plenty of power for almost any amount of weight you plan on adding. The bigger motors are rare to see in the A20 because it really is not needed. Although it has the TBI style intake and that ='s inefficiency to you, it is really not the case for this motor, relatively speaking. I consistently get 3.5 gph on my A22 with the 335 CAT motor and a whole lot of weight. It really is a great and efficient motor. I have heard of 5 gph's for most other motors, 8-10 in the old stars (04-11) and up to 15 in the new G series nautiques. I would chose the 335 if I had the choice between that and the 350 or 400.

2. Yes you can. You could redo most of it, changing the 2 rear tank pumps (4 total) to the 1200 gph and going with the large diameter hoses, leaving the centers alone (the stock ones are fine for that 400 tank), and adding 1200's fill and drain pumps and a thru hull up front for the bow bag. OR you could just upgrade the center pumps and hoses, and overflow out of that tank to the bow sack (this would take a long time probably and you would no longer be able to fill the bow sack without first filling the hard tank). The rear pnp option was nothing more than extra hose and extra anti siphon valves. That option from the factory was really only good for the front sack pumps, hoses, overflow and drain holes, and wired in rocker switch.

3. Your pro star is a super light boat. The A20, although only a foot longer, is probably close to a foot wider plus the wide bow, and probably weights and additional 1000 lbs over your prostar (just a guess). Add in all the extra gear and equipment you can put in this bigger boat plus any lead you will probably be adding to it, you have a way heavier boat than a dd ski boat. The tandem trailer is not a necessity but it is nice if you tow a lot.

4. Ive got nothing. I see so many aftermarket surfgate systems being added that you should be able to add it later if you need it for a reasonable price.

Every year they seem to get better, but my buddy has an 09 and I have a 2011 and they are both incredible.

Thanks for your insight very helpful. About the price tho I've seen a lot of low numbers on here for these boats new and used but going by inboards only and boat trader.com prices it seems 40 is 10k lower then anything on those sites in located in the north east I test drove the 2012 and was impressed just waiting to pull the trigger so to speak
